Latest News Briefs * Updated Almost Daily *
- (Mar 05) The D.C. Public Library System is spending $55 million over the next few years to renovate its building stock and update its book collections. Takoma's neighborhood library, D.C.'s oldest, is set to reopen on Tuesday, March 10, after its nearly $2 million renovation. I especially like how they have preserved and restored the original interior finishes of the library as well as purchasing replicas of the original furniture from when the library first opened in 1911. This furniture is very comfortable! The furniture at the Mount Pleasant neighborhood library is comfortable and very attractive, too.
- (Mar 03) The D.C. Government announces a small business plan competition with a $100,000 prize for the winner! The winner also gets reduced-price office space from Preferred Office and pro-bono legal services from Venable LLC. More here, and apply now!
- (Feb 23) National's Park will host its first music concert on July 11th with Elton John and Billy Joel. More here!
- (Feb 18) Work has begun to construct D.C.'s first permanent off-leash public dog park. Located at 17th and S Streets, NW, the 5,600 square foot dog park will feature an artificial grass designed specifically for dogs, historic ornamental fencing, a seating area, and a water fountain for dogs. The DC Department of Parks and Recreation anticipates the dog park shall be ready to open by this year's Memorial Day holiday weekend.
- (Feb 16) Sometime last year, I updated you on D.C.'s status as a leading jurisdiction in the captive insurance industry. I can now report that over 100 captive insurance companies have chosen D.C. as their headquarters. As of March 2008, D.C. was the 7th largest captive domicile in the U.S. and the 16th largest in the world according to the Insurance Information Institute. An update on these rankings should be available next month. D.C. has been licensing captives since 2001. The District Department of Insurance, Securities, and Banking (DISB) has grown an outstanding national and international reputation in the captive insurance industry for its efficient regulatory environment, streamlined licensing process, and forward-thinking legislation.
- (Feb 15) Senate to vote on D.C. Voting Rights Act on February 24. This bill is on the fast track!
